I know I and many others struggle with the onslaught of email messages into their inbox making it hard to see the important emails. So Gmail has recently been updated with improvements to streamlining your inbox filtering out the mess so you can see the wood through the trees. Your inbox can now be separated into Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates & Forums.

Google will automatically work out which email is which however if it gets it wrong then you can easily correct it with gmail remembering your selection.
